A physical therapy clinic in Ridgefield, America, has been using a Nintendo games console to help patients in their rehabilitation efforts.
Ridgefield Physical Therapy has been in the local press for its innovative use of the Nintendo Wii, which the clinic claims helps to provide individualised treatment for patients recovering from physical injury.
Staff at the clinic add therapeutic tools such as foam blocks and gym balls to add a more interesting and creative aspect to programmes on the Wii, the Ridgefield Press reported.
Clinic-owner Chuck Giordano said: "Not only are the programs fun and engaging but they have been proven to be effective in patient care. Initial studies have shown patients improve in strength, balance and function after training with the Wii."
The fact that many people have Wii consoles in their family homes, means that rehabilitation treatment can continue between sessions, or after they have been discharged from the clinic.
