NINTENDO will reveal the successor to its Wii console this summer, the Japanese video games giant said today, as it reported a 66 per cent slump in annual profit.
The Kyoto-based company, which created the Super Mario franchise and handheld Nintendo DS and 3DS consoles, will launch the new console in 2012 but will show a playable model at a trade fair in Los Angeles in June.
The new device will replace the Wii, which has sold 86 million units since its launch in 2006. The Wii is distinguished by its wireless controller, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement.
The company will hope the new console boosts sales after reporting a drop in earnings for the second year in a row, as net profit for the year ending March 31 came in at 77.6 billion yen (£572.4 million) from 228.6 billion yen (£1.6billion) in the previous year.

Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo’s legendary games developer that created the Mario and Zelda games series gave clues as to the next console by the company. Miyamoto did not reveal too many details about the console but mentioned there’s “no smoke without fire” – and thus confirmed that the company is indeed working on a new hardware that will apparently be shown during the E3.
Despite that, Miyamoto also quickly said “you don’t have to believe everything your read” – which probably means not all the rumors were true.
