GADGETRON: Droid 4 delivers clunky keyboard, dull performance

Beneath the hood of the Droid 4 is a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor, an ample amount of RAM at 1GB along with 16GB of built-in storage.

Yet, even with all of that power, the Droid 4’s performance feels hampered. Like all other Motorola smartphones, it’s running 2.3 Gingerbread, an old version of the Android operating system. In fairness, the latest version of Android, 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, is on very few devices.

Motorola and other manufacturers, like HTC, Samsung and LG, are working to update their devices to the new OS. Unfortunately, most of those devices, including the Droid 4, won’t receive the update until the fall.

The Droid 4’s interface skin, which Motorola also has loaded onto the Droid 3, Bionic and RAZR, falls short, as well. What I said about this skin when reviewing the Droid 3 in July of last year remains true: It’s clunky and often slow.

The power behind the device makes for a lot of speed in Web browsing and gaming, but exit back to the home screen and, at least a few times a day, you’ll see the interface struggle to catch up as it repopulates the home screen with your icons and widgets.
