So there are these three unemployed guys who join an Occupy movement, help with the kidnapping of a 1-percenter's daughter and find themselves on the front lines of the culture wars. Of course, the fact that this is a black-and-white Japanese samurai film from the 1960s and our antiheroes wield swords instead of picket signs makes Hideo Gosha's debut film a lot of fun. Gosha ("Sword of the Beast") based his low-budget film on an "A-Team"-like TV series he created. It stars Tetsuro Tanba ("You Only Live Twice") as Shiba, the ragtag three amigos' nominal leader, and what raises the film above the standard actioner is his preference for diplomacy and socio-philosophical ramblings over starting a fight (but when that fight is started, he and his pals can finish it). What gives "Three Outlaw Samurai" extra depth is the two main women in the film: the hostage (Miyuki Kuwano), who comes to understand the peasants' struggle, yet refuses to outright betray her father; and a widow (Toshie Kimura) who strikes up a tender relationship with the samurai (Isamu Nagato) who killed her husband. Gosha handles all of these plot strands and the dozen or so main characters effortlessly in an economical 93 minutes. Cool stuff.
