MIDDLESEX COUNTY – Computer training classes to help job seekers improve their computer and job search skills under the NJ State Library’s $5.1 million Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP) grant are underway in Middlesex County at the libraries in Woodbridge, Jamesburg, Carteret and South Amboy.
The classes are offered through Middlesex County College and focus on the basic computer skills needed by every job applicant to make them more confident and self-sufficient.
The block of four classes scheduled at the South Brunswick Library were completed on April 27. Attendees gave high marks to the program and the instructors. “These computer classes are really what is needed in today’s job searching,” said Annette Milton of Somerset. “The resume writing class gave me the information I need to write a resume based on what employers are looking for.”
...NEW BRUNSWICK — They make honeycomb-style modular homes, fashion fire bowls out of discarded elevator cables, launch high-altitude balloons to near space, host underground hip hop concerts and create medical lab equipment for developing countries.
These are some activities of New Jersey "hackerspaces," grassroots gathering places for geeks, musicians and artists of all ages bound by their passion for learning new skills and technologies and creating useful things. The groups alternatively call their laboratories fab labs, makelabs and makerspaces. They include the Trenton Atelier in Mercer County, FUBAR (Fair Use Building And Research) Labs in Middlesex County and the Institute of Exploratory Research in Monmouth County.
Drawing on that entrepreneurial ethos, Rutgers University is forming at least two labs for students who want to get together and collaborate on projects. The Rutgers Makerspace Association, which has about 60 student members, was formed by Rick Anderson, director of virtual worlds for the Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies.
