We all woke up this morning to National Margarita Day (salud, todo el mundo!), but as part of our ode to agave, most of us will perform sacrilege by using sweet mixes, excessive ice and blenders (there's even a no-calorie, no-carb, just-add-water mix called No-Carbarita on the market).
Let's stop this madness.
Known as the "Margarita Man," Martinez got his brain-freeze idea as a 26-year-old high school dropout who owned a small Mexican restaurant in Dallas. His keen business acumen made him a millionaire (Americans consume 180,000 margaritas every hour), but it ultimately diluted a simple, longstanding, classic recipe for margaritas (great tequila, fresh lime juice and orange liqueur over ice).
